Seun Kuti, the musician and son of Fela Anikulapo Kuti, has criticized comedian Ayo Makun, popularly known as AY, for his response to receiving a national honour from the Nigerian government. The government, under former President Muhammadu Buhari, announced a list of 337 Nigerians, including AY, who would be conferred with national honours on June 1, 2023.
AY, in a tweet addressing critics who questioned his acceptance of the award, stated that a national honour is the highest recognition one can receive and that his allegiance is to the country where he has made contributions. He emphasized that the award is not about any president or political party but about the recognition of his efforts in nation-building.
Seun Kuti, however, found AY’s explanation unnecessary and mocked him on his Instagram page and story. Seun Kuti pointed out that national honours are not determined by public opinion but are chosen by a presidential committee, and the president then accepts the nominations. He urged AY to accept his “Buhari award” and stop explaining himself. Seun Kuti accused AY of being a sellout and criticized him for trying to dress up hypocrisy as national loyalty or patriotism, given his possession of two homes and two passports.
Seun Kuti’s response suggests that he sees AY’s acceptance of the national honour as an act of compromise and lacking in principles. He implies that AY should not try to justify or explain his decision but should instead accept the award without further ado.
