Biography
Bola Ahmed Adekunle Tinubu (born March 29, 1952), sometimes known as the Jagaban of Lagos, is a 70-year-old politician and businessman from Nigeria.
He is also an elder statesman and an All Progressives Congress (APC) national leader.
From 1999 to 2007, he served as the 12th Governor of Lagos State.
Bola Tinubu is recognized as the godfather of many Nigerian politicians and serves as a mentor to many budding politicians.
Early Years and Education
Bola Tinubu was born in Osun State on March 29, 1952, into the prominent Tinubu family; his mother, the trader Abibatu Mogaji, eventually became the yál’jà of Lagos.
St. John’s Primary School in Aroloya, Lagos, and Children’s Home School in Ibadan, south-west Nigeria, provided his initial formal education.
Bola Tinubu was then sent to Richard J. Daley College in Chicago, Illinois, and Chicago State University to further his education.
In 1979, he graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Accounting.
Career
Before returning to Nigeria, Bola Tinubu worked in the United States for top organizations such as Deloitte, Arthur Anderson, and GTE Services Corporation.
After returning to Nigeria in 1983, he secured employment with Mobil Oil, Nigeria, where he later ascended to the executive level.
Nonetheless, he began his political career in 1992, when he was elected senator for the Lagos West seat in the brief Third Republic of Nigeria.
After the annulment of the June 12 election, Bola Tinubu and other well-intentioned Nigerians created the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO), an organization intent on restoring democracy and recognizing the June 12 results.
He fled Nigeria in 1994 due to arrests and torture, then returned in 1998 after the murder of Sani Abacha.
In 1999, Bola Tinubu ran for and won the position of governor of Lagos State under the auspices of the Alliance for Democracy (AD).
He was re-elected for a second term in April 2003 and served until 2007. He is the current national leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC) party under the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari.
Personal Affairs
Oluremi Tinubu, the incumbent senator of the Lagos Central Senatorial District, is married to Bola Tinubu. The marriage is blessed with four children, albeit one of them was born late.
His identification as a Muslim has been confirmed. Abibatu Mogaji, his mother, reportedly passed away on June 15, 2014, at the age of 96.
