Career
As a tribute to his mentor Fela Kuti, D’banj uses a mix of Afrobeat and Afropop to bring his music into the 21st century with vigor and comedy. His songs reflect the struggle of a young Nigerian attempting to realize his aspirations and are frequently humorous, but have a deeper meaning. He performs in Yoruba, American English, and Pidgin American English.
D’banj’s debut album, No Long Thing, was released in 2005. It produced multiple singles, with Tongolo being the most prominent. This was his breakout single and was a success. It also contributed to his Koko Master identity, with Koko having multiple meanings.
The popularity of D’banj’s debut album led to collaborations with artists such as Dare Art Alade and Ikechukwu. Nigeria’s ruling political party, the PDP, used his song “Koko” as the theme of its campaign for the 2007 federal elections.
The 2006 release of D’banj’s second studio album, Rundown (Fuck U Up), produced various hits, including the club single Tongolo (Remix) and the lead track Why Me? This was yet another success.
As of that time, he was a Mo’Hits Records artist and a member of the label’s collective group, Mo’ Hits Allstars (which also included Dr. SID, Wande Coal, KaySwitch, and D’Prince). He was once spotted with Smile Lasisi, one of Nigeria’s most outstanding singers. Curriculum Vitae, the group’s debut album, was released in December 2007. It includes the popular singles “Be Close To You,” “Booty Call,” and the lead single “Move Your Body.” D’banj was featured on the 2008 hit single “Wind Am Well” by Ikechukwu.
D’banj’s third album, The Entertainer, was released in July 2008 with the singles “Gbono Feli Feli”, “Kimon”, “Olorun Maje”, and “Entertainer.”
D’banj was signed to Kanye West’s G.O.O.D. Music record company as an artist in June 2011. On June 9, 2011, he posted on his Twitter account, @iamdbanj, “Just like yesterday, my brother and I went to Tongolo. After seven years, Mo’Hits joined GOOD Music. The greatest birthday present ever. Thank you, God.
It was confirmed in September 2016 that D’banj had been released from GOOD Music.
In August, he released the album King Don Come, which featured guest appearances by Gucci Mane, Wande Coal, Harrysong, Bucie, Busiswa, etc. The album features the singles “It’s Not A Lie,” “El Chapo,” and “Oliver Twist,” which was his 2012 mega-hit

Personal Affairs
In June 2016, D’banj married Lineo Didi Kilgrow. In May of 2017, he announced the birth of their son, Daniel Oyebanjo III. The infant drowned in June of 2018.
D’banj dated the Nollywood actress Genevieve Nnaji in the past.
In June 2020, Seyitan Babatayo accused D’banj of raping her in 2018. She said she wanted to “call him out on his hypocrisy” after he posted on social media to “say no to rape.”
Two days later, she went missing, and while she was missing, posts on her social media indicated that the allegations were a publicity hoax to promote a forthcoming single by D’banj. The Guardian says that the organization Stand to End Rape helped find her (STER).
She said that she was kidnapped by Nigerian police, who then passed her over to D’banj’s management team, who co-opted her social media and made the retractions. D’banj disputed the allegations, describing them as “false allegations and falsehoods from hell.” After a few days, Babatayo released a statement saying that she and D’banj had come to a “non-monetary” agreement. She said, “I just want my peace.”
D’banj sued Babatayo for N1.5 billion on July 3, 2020. Shortly thereafter, D’banj’s former manager, Franklin Amudo, said that Babatayo told him the day after the alleged rape that D’banj had raped her.
The 42-year-old lyricist spoke at the “Bliss Experience,” a church event hosted by the musician Moses Bliss.
In June of 2018, Dbanj and his wife, Lineo Didi Kilgrow, lamented the loss of their one-year-old baby, Daniel Oyebanjo III. At the time, it was alleged that the child drowned in the pool at the singer’s residence in Ikoyi, Lagos. They welcomed their second kid, Zane Oyebanjo, with joy.
In reference to the unfortunate event, D’banj stated that God has blessed him with not one but two children.
