Ella Mai began her music career in 2014 after enrolling in college (BIMM London). In the same year, she founded the trio Arize and competed in the eleventh season of the British reality music competition The X Factor. However, her group was unable to get past the preliminary auditions, and the band disbanded shortly thereafter.
In 2015, Ella debuted as a solo artist with the publication of her four-track EP Troubled on SoundCloud. DJ Mustard discovered her via her Instagram releases and decided to sign her to his record label, 10 Summers. Her EP attracted a large audience, and DJ Mustard signed her to his label.Â
