Early Life And Education
His Majesty King Charles III (Charles Philip Arthur George; 14 November 1948) is the monarch of the United Kingdom and 14 other Commonwealth states. His mother, Elizabeth II, died on September 8, 2022, and he became King on that day. Prior to his accession, he served as the Duke of Cornwall and Duke of Rothesay from 1952 until his coronation.
He also held the title of Prince of Wales from July 26, 1958, until his coronation, making him the longest-serving Prince of Wales in British history. Charles, at age 73, succeeded William IV, who, at age 64, had been the oldest to ascend to the British throne since 1830.
Prince Charles III is the first grandchild of King George VI and his wife, Queen Elizabeth II, and the first child of his mother and Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. He was born at Buckingham Palace. Several young women were romantically involved with Charles. Granduncle Lord Mountbatten gave him this piece of advice: A man in your situation should sow his wild oats and have as many affairs as he can before settling down, but he should pick a good wife for himself while the girl is still single and pretty and has a good personality. If women are expected to maintain their privileged status after marriage, it might be upsetting for them to go through life’s ups and downs.
The daughter of the British ambassador to Spain, Georgiana Russell, was one of Charles’s girlfriends, as were the daughters of the 8th Duke of Wellington, Lady Jane Wellesley, Davina Sheffield, Lady Sarah Spencer, and Camilla Shand. Charles wrote to Amanda’s mother, Lady Brabourne, who was also his godmother, expressing interest in her daughter, and Lady Brabourne responded favorably, though she did suggest that a courtship with a girl who was not yet 17 years old was premature. Charles formally declined Chevening House, which had been at his disposal since 1974, as his future residence in June 1980. Amanda’s great-uncle, the late Earl Stanhope, who was childless, left the Kent manor of Chevening and its endowment to the Crown in the expectation that Charles would one day live there. Marriage
The first time Charles met Lady Diana Spencer was in 1977, when he paid a visit to her home in Althorp. He dated Sarah, her older sister, and didn’t give Diana a second thought as a potential romantic interest until the middle of the 1980s. Sitting on a hay bale at a friend’s July BBQ, Diana remarked to Charles that he looked sad and in need of care at the funeral of his granduncle Lord Mountbatten.
Eventually, she went with Charles to Balmoral Castle and Sandringham House, and Charles’s chosen biographer, Jonathan Dimbleby, said that “without any apparent surge of feelings, he began to think seriously of her as a future bride.”
The press and paparazzi were paying close attention to Charles and Diana as they continued their courtship, and Charles’s cousin Norton Knatchbull and his wife told him that Diana seemed awestruck by his status and that he did not seem to be in love with her.
After hearing his father, Prince Philip, warn that Diana’s reputation would suffer if Charles did not make a decision about their impending marriage soon and realizing that Diana was a suitable royal bride (according to Mountbatten’s criteria), Charles took Philip’s words as a warning to move forward with the wedding as soon as possible.

In the television documentary Charles: The Private Man, The Public Role, narrated by Jonathan Dimbleby and originally shown on June 29, 1994, the prince actively sought public comprehension. After Diana admitted marital problems in an interview with the BBC current affairs show Panorama broadcast on November 20, 1995, the documentary features an interview in which Charles confirms his own extramarital affair with Camilla, saying he rekindled their association only after his marriage to Diana had “irretrievably broken down” in 1986. She said, “Well, there were three of us in this marriage, so it was a bit crowded.” Charles and Diana divorced on August 28, 1996, after being formally advised by the Queen to end their marriage in December 1995. Diana was killed in a car crash in Paris on August 31, 1997; Charles flew to Paris with Diana’s sisters to accompany her body back to England.
