Childhood And Career
In the early 1990s, when he began his career, Ologunde assumed the name Lágbájá (meaning “Jane Doe” or “John Doe” in Yoruba, a person whose name or identity is deliberately concealed). In keeping with the Yoruba carnival tradition, he wore a mask made of fabric and rubber with holes in it so that he could look like an “ordinary man.”
After teaching himself how to play the saxophone On his own, he started a small band in Lagos, Nigeria, in 1991. Lagbaja’s 2000 CD, We Before Me (IndigeDisc/PDSE), which featured a significant proportion of percussion instruments such as congas and talking drums, demanded honesty from politicians and urged fraternity and unity.
He collaborated on song lyrics with a backup singer, Ego Ihenacho, and plays tenor saxophone as well. He imprinted the melody of the songs with a tone comparable to that of John Coltrane and Pharoah Sanders, often with Ego scat-singing along.
Discography
You will agree with me that Lagbaja is one of the most creative and distinctive musicians from Nigeria’s southwest. Before his first album came out in 1993, he had already found his own style of music.
He captivated the hearts of many with his emphasis on traditional African drums rooted in Yoruba music combined with jazz.
Another intriguing aspect of his musical style is the utilization of pure instrumentals.
Constantly, there is a magnificent interplay between typical Yoruba drums, percussion, drums, chants, and western musical instruments like the saxophone.
