Omah Lay is a Nigerian singer, songwriter, and record producer who was born on 19 May 1997. Early in 2020, he rose to prominence after his self-produced tune “Bad Influence” went popular on social media.

Early life and education
Omah Lay is a native of Ikwerre Local Government Area in the state of Rivers. Prior to enrolling at the University of Port Harcourt, he attended Comprehensive High School in Rivers State.his grandfather performed with the vocalist Celestine Ukwu who passed away in 1977. Lay’s father was a drummer.
Coming from a loving but disciplined family, Omah Lay received a very sound education.
He finished his elementary and secondary schools with good grades in his Common Entrance Examination and SSCE.
Career
Omah Lay began his career as a member of a rap group known as “Lil King.” In April 2019, he released “Do Not Disturb” as a result of his songwriting and music production work, for which he received little credit. The song “Hello Brother” was released one month later.
In June of 2019, he signed with the record company KeyQaad and then took a seven-month hiatus. During the break, he worked on Get Layd, his debut EP. He explained to OkayAfrica “I began work on it in August of 2019.
At some point, I had to disconnect from social media, avoid a variety of distractions, and have a clear mind in order to complete the assignment correctly.
“Bad Influence” was the initial track I recorded for Get Laid. This was completed well before the songs we had to include in the project. Following the break, he released “Bad Influence,” which at the end of 2020 was the most streamed Nigerian song on Apple Music.
Lay released “You” on February 14, 2020, as his first official single. His five-track debut EP, Get Layd, was released on May 22, 2020.
The EP landed at number one on the Apple Music charts in Nigeria. Each of the EP’s five tracks entered the top 15 of the Apple Music charts in Nigeria, with “You” reaching the top spot.
In October, Lay participated in the tune “Infinity” from Olamide’s album Carpe Diem, which topped the Nigerian Apple Music charts.
What Have We Done?, Lay’s second five-track EP, was released on November 20. All five songs entered the top 12 on the Nigerian Apple Music charts, with “Godly” attaining the top spot.
Lay was the first African musician to be honored by Apple’s Africa Rising Campaign on July 3, 2020.
He was named on BBC Radio 1Xtra’s annual “Hot for 2021” list in December 2020.
He was the first African musician to be included in Audiomack # Up Now program for young artists; he was chosen one of the “20 artists to watch in 2021” by the Montreux Jazz Festival; and he was named BET’s Amplified International Artist of the Month for November 2020.
Currently, he has distribution deals with Dvpper Music Distribution in Nigeria and Sire Records for international distribution.
He won the Next Rated award at the 2020 Headies Awards, for which he was nominated in four categories.
On 25 2021, Lay and fellow Nigerian singer Alpha P were included in the official remix of Canadian artist Justin Bieber’s hit “Peaches” by Nigerian producer Masterkraft. Lay released a new single, “Understand,” on July 8, 2021. “Attention” is the second collaboration between the two artists and was released on March 3, 2022.
Controversy
On December 14, 2020, Lay and Tems were both arrested in Uganda following a performance. The Ugandan Police cited violations of COVID-19 lockdown procedures as the grounds for their detention.
The artists believed they were duped. Two days later, the Ugandan government apologized for the detention, released the two, and dropped all charges.

Personal life
Omah Lay, who is 25 years old and has been called a lyrical genius, has one of the largest fan followings in Nigeria. He is adored by both the young and the old. In addition to his talent for singing, he also has an excellent fashion sense.
In December 2020, he and the Alte singer Tems were detained in Kampala, Uganda, on their way to a performance.
They were hastily arraigned in court and incarcerated. However, the Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs intervened and negotiated their release, and they went home in good health.
