Childhood And Education
Skales, who hails from the state of Edo, was reared only by his mother, an unskilled worker. On April 1, 1991, he was born in Jos, Kaduna State, Nigeria.
While Skales was growing up, his mother ran a store that sold cassettes. This is where he first became interested in music.
Skales attended the University of Jos and Lead City University in Ibadan for his postsecondary studies. According to records, he left the University of Jos in his junior year and eventually earned a degree in Office Management and Technology from Lead City University.
Career
Skales developed an interest in music through frequent visits to his mother’s tape store. While attending the University of Jos, he met producers Jeremiah Gyang and Jesse Jagz (UNIJOS). He took part in the Zain Tru Search Competition at Unijos and won the North Central region of the competition.
Skales departed UNIJOS during his junior year to earn a degree in office management and technology from Lead City University. “Must Shine,” his debut single, was released to critical acclaim.
In a 2013 interview with the publication This Day, Skales identified himself as a performer whose music is affected by his environment. “Jesus Walks” by Kanye West influenced his 2009 album “Heading for a Grammy.” The circumstances he was going through influenced the song’s theme, which is a homage to self-determination.
Skales secured a record contract with E.M.E in 2009 after meeting Banky W. Simultaneously, he released the singles “Mukulu” and “Keresimesi.” Both tracks were produced and released by Sarz as a member of the group. The latter song’s music video was directed by Clarence Peters and published on YouTube on November 28, 2011.
On E.M.E.’s debut album, Empire Mates State of Mind, Skales was one of the featured artists (2012). On five of the album’s seven hits, he worked alongside Banky W, Wizkid, Shaydee, Niyola, and DJ Xclusive. On the EME US Tour, which began on July 4 and concluded on September 2, 2012, he also toured alongside several of the aforementioned groups.
Multiple cities, including Houston, Dallas, Toronto, Vancouver, New York City, Providence, Calgary, Atlanta, Washington, D.C., and Chicago, hosted E.M.E. performances. In 2012, Skales accompanied Wizkid on his London tour. On October 17, 2013, he performed at the Felabration 2013 concert, which is held every year in honor of Fela Kuti.
The Vanguard newspaper stated in February 2014 that Skales departed E.M.E. after his four-year recording deal expired. Executives of E.M.E. believed they were not being compensated for their investment in him, so they declined to renew his contract.
Skales founded his own musical label, OHK Music, in May 2014. The label is home to producer Drey Beatz and has connections to other Nigerian musicians. The Jay Pizzle-produced tune “Shake Body” was released as the lead single from his debut studio album “Man of the Year” on May 6, 2014. On July 22, 2014, the accompanying music video for the song was published on YouTube.
Skales promoted the song by organizing a video contest for Shake Body. Following his departure from E.M.E., it was claimed that Skales inked a record deal with Timaya’s Dem Mama Records. Skales denied the rumors in February 2014, stating that he did not sign with Dem Mama Records.
Personal Affairs
Skales was involved in a car accident on the Lekki-Epe Expressway in December 2011. His vehicle crashed into a ditch and somersaulted. The accident resulted in one fatality and three injuries.
Several famous people, like Davido and John Ogu of the Super Eagles, criticized Desmond Elliot for putting off regulation of social media until October 2020.
Skales confirmed his engagement to his girlfriend on Instagram on March 14, 2021. He tied the knot with Hassanity Precious, his longtime girlfriend. He once dated Neza.
