President Bola Tinubu has designated Mr. Folashodun Adebisi Shonubi as the acting Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). This appointment comes in the wake of the suspension of Godwin Emefiele as the CBN Governor on Friday.
Prior to assuming this new role, Shonubi had been serving as the Deputy Governor of the Operations Directorate since October 2018. Bayo Onanuga, a media aide to Tinubu, shared this information on Twitter. According to Onanuga’s tweet, Shonubi, born on March 7, 1962, holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering, which he obtained from the University of Lagos. Additionally, Shonubi represents the CBN on the board of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS).
As previously reported, Emefiele has been directed to promptly hand over the responsibilities of his office to the Deputy Governor of the Operations Directorate. The Deputy Governor will fulfill the role of the Central Bank Governor on an interim basis until the conclusion of the investigation and implementation of reforms.
