Produced by Steve Mac, “Fire on Fire” is a song by English vocalist Sam Smith. Smith and Mac collaborated on the script for the 2018 Netflix film based on the 1972 book Watership Down.
On December 21, 2018, Capitol Records dropped “Fire on Fire” as a digital single. Hungary, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Switzerland, and Ireland all placed it in their top 40. Smith’s third studio album, Love Goes On, features the song in 2020.
Recorded in September 2018 at London’s Abbey Road Studios with the BBC Concert Orchestra, the song was composed by Sam Smith and producer/songwriter Steve Mac.
Smith declared in an official statement: “Being a part of this updated version of Watership Down is a tremendous privilege. It was a blast collaborating on this song with director Noam Murro, his crew, and the incomparable Steve Mac since this tale is both profound and everlasting. I really think everyone should enjoy it as much as I do.”
Billboard’s Gil Kaufman praised “Fire on Fire,” writing that it was “a haunting and passionate ballad.”
In his article, he stated that Smith’s moving theme song captures the story’s ups and downs of anxiety, optimism, and companionship.
