According to figures reported by Billboard from the Meta-owned company, Doja Cat lost 237,758 followers on Instagram after a public altercation with her fans. The incident occurred when she criticized her fanbase across various social media platforms on July 24, 2023, and resorted to name-calling.
The controversy surrounding Doja Cat is not new, as she has always been a controversial artist. However, her recent outburst against her fans raised questions about whether she went too far.
In a series of now-deleted posts on Twitter and Threads, Doja Cat expressed her frustration with her fans who tried to name themselves ‘Kittenz’ as a way to unite the group. She strongly objected to them using that name and stated that her fans do not have the right to name themselves. She even advised those using such names to stop being so involved in fandom and instead focus on finding jobs and assisting their parents.
When some fans reminded her that she had previously selected the name ‘Kittenz’ for her fandom in a 2020 Twitter poll, Doja Cat dismissed it by saying it was during her teenage years.
In response to inquiries about changing their social media handles, the rapper told her supporters to delete their fan pages entirely and rethink their approach.
Despite the backlash and heated exchange with her fans, Doja Cat has made it clear that she is unapologetic and indifferent to the consequences. She continued to make headlines, showing little concern for the potential impact on her fanbase.
