Popular comedian Seyi Law has publicly criticized his fellow comedians for not coming to his defense when he faced backlash and insults on social media for supporting President Bola Tinubu’s presidential candidacy in the 2023 general election.
Seyi Law expressed that the year 2023 has been an eye-opener for him, revealing how people can harbor negative thoughts. In a post he shared on his social media handle, Seyi Law pointed out that when an individual’s choice differs from those who believe they represent the majority, the common forms of attack include character assassination, damaging one’s career, attacking their family, and even wishing harm upon them.
He wrote, “The events of 2023 have provided me with a clearer perspective on people’s mindset, and it’s disheartening. I have always been ready to stand up for my colleagues when they face challenges, but during the elections, many chose to remain silent when I was subjected to name-calling.
“One of them even told me, ‘You took the support too personally, and we know they didn’t pay you for it.’ They acknowledged that I am a good person, but they emphasized that we are not politicians. Whoever wins, we will still work with. This left me astounded. I simply asked them to consider whether they would have had a problem if I had shown the same support for their preferred candidate. Their response indicated that they would have seen it positively because I would have been on their side. I explained to them that the issue wasn’t about what I did but rather who I did it for.
“When your choice diverges from those who perceive themselves as the majority, their preferred methods of attack involve tarnishing your character, sabotaging your career, targeting your family, and even wishing harm upon you. Many of those who accused me of being on the wrong side are individuals with their own moral shortcomings, projecting their flaws onto me to boost their own self-esteem.”
