The Recording Academy, the organizers of the Grammy Awards, has introduced a new category called “Best African Music Performance.” This announcement was made through a statement on the academy’s website on Tuesday. In addition to this category, two other new categories have been created: Best Pop Dance Recording and Best Alternative Jazz Album. Starting from next year’s show, these new categories will receive nominations.
The statement explains that the inclusion of the Best African Music Performance category is a response to the global success and influence of African artists such as Burna Boy, Wizkid, and Tems, as well as the rise of the Afrobeats genre.
This category encompasses a wide range of contemporary and traditional music from the African continent, including Afrobeats, Afro-pop, Amapiano, High Life, Fuji, and more.
