Nathan Evans Wellerman (Sea Shanty): The Weller brothers, who were among the first European settlers in Otago, are referred to in the song as “wellermen,” indicating to supply ships they owned.
Early in 2021, a Scottish artist named Nathan Evans’ interpretation of a maritime song became viral on the social media platform TikTok, sparking a “social media craze” for sea shanties and nautical tunes.
A rendition of the song appeared on the Wellington Sea Shanty Society’s 2013 album Now That’s What I Call Sea Shanties Vol. 1.
The Bristol-based a cappella group the Longest Johns released their collection of nautical songs Between Wind and Water in 2018 and included a particularly well-known performance of the tune.
Wellington Sea Shanty Society member Lake Davineer observed that their recording has gained fresh acclaim following the “ShantyTok” social media phenomenon in 2021.
Alestorm and Storm Seeker, two pirate metal bands, covered “Wellerman” in 2021.

Wellerman (Sea Shanty) Lyrics by Nathan Evans
[Intro]
There once was a ship that put to sea
The name of the ship was the Billy of Tea
The winds blew up, her bow dipped down
O blow, my bully boys, blow (Huh!)
[Verse 1]
There once was a ship that put to sea
The name of the ship was the Billy of Tea
The winds blew up, her bow dipped down
O blow, my bully boys, blow (Huh!)
[Chorus]
Soon may the Wellerman come
To bring us sugar and tea and rum
One day, when the tonguin’ is done
We’ll take our leave and go
Soon may the Wellerman come
To bring us sugar and tea and rum
One day, when the tonguin’ is done
We’ll take our leave and go
[Verse 2]
She’d not been two weeks from shore
When down on her, a right whale bore
The captain called all hands and swore
He’d take that whale in tow (Huh!)
[Chorus]
Soon may the Wellerman come
To bring us sugar and tea and rum
One day, when the tonguin’ is done
We’ll take our leave and go
[Verse 3]
Before the boat had hit the water
The whale’s tail came up and caught her
All hands to the side, harpooned and fought her
When she dived down low (Huh!)
[Chorus]
Soon may the Wellerman come
To bring us sugar and tea and rum
One day, when the tonguin’ is done
We’ll take our leave and go
Soon may the Wellerman come
To bring us sugar and tea and rum
One day, when the tonguin’ is done
We’ll take our leave and go
