Nigerian Afro-pop singer, Adekunle Gold, recently engaged in a social media confrontation with Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) in Ile Ife, Osun State. The exchange began after the university extended an invitation on Twitter for artists to organize concerts at their institution.
In response, Adekunle Gold recalled an incident that occurred at OAU in 2015, where he claimed to have been humiliated at his hotel after performing his only song at the time, ‘Sade’. He accused the university of treating him unfairly during that event and warned other artists to stay away from the school.
In a series of tweets, the singer vehemently expressed his dissatisfaction with OAU, calling them “fucking liars” and stating that they were aware that he had only one song at the time of the performance. He recounted how he prostrated for the students, hyped the crowd, performed acapella, sang the full song ‘Sade’, interacted with the audience, and repeated the process.
In another tweet, Adekunle Gold emphasized that performers who choose to go to OAU should be prepared for any negative experiences they encounter, suggesting that he holds a negative perception of the university based on his past encounter.
