Femi Kuti, a Grammy-nominated afrobeat musician, has shared a personal story about a challenging period in his life following the deaths of his father, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, his sister Shola Kuti, and a cousin within a short span of time. He revealed that during that time, people predicted that 12 members of his family would die in quick succession.
As the eldest son, Femi Kuti faced immense pressure to be strong and carry the family through the crisis. In an interview with Chude Jideonwo, he recalled how some believed he would lose his sanity after his wife, Funke, left him amidst the turmoil.
Reflecting on that difficult period, Femi Kuti shared, “Fela had just gone [died]. My sister [Shola] had gone. My cousin had gone. Some people were predicting that 12 of us would die. And I [was] saying, is this prediction going to come true? We had our internal family problems. They would say, ‘You know, you are the first son; you must do it.’ And I would say, ‘Who born me inside this wahala like this?’ Then my wife got separated from me. And they said, ‘Femi is going mad.’ It was terrible.”
Despite the challenges, Femi Kuti expressed gratitude for the experience, acknowledging that it played a significant role in shaping him into the person he is today.
