The Supernumerary Police, or Spy Police, is a division of the Nigerian Police Force. This is a specialized police unit that was established in response to the deteriorating security situation in the country, with a firm resolve to make a difference and assist customers in maintaining their benefits without stress or pressure, so they can focus on their primary responsibilities. For this reason, our security faculty’s specialized and expert skills are consistently emphasized.
Why are there Supernumerary Police or SPY Police?
Section 46 of the Police Act CAP 359 of 1968, as amended by Section 418 of the Police Act CAP 359 of the laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in 1990, established the Supernumerary Police in Nigeria.
Under this act, any person (including any administrative division) desiring to benefit from the SPY Police in Nigeria of one or more official police of this nature for the security of property claimed or constrained by him/her may apply to the Inspector-General of Police of the federation or State Commissioner of Police, stating the nature and circumstances of the company being referred to and providing such other investment as the Inspector-General of Police deems necessary.
There are frequently spied-on police officers in banks, organizations, and even federal buildings. Some employees serve as drivers, orderlies, and even security personnel.
Their logo is similar to that of normal police officers because they perform comparable functions.
The extent of their responsibilities distinguishes a supernumerary police force from a regular police force.
Massive multinational corporations, including oil, pharmaceutical, insurance, and other private corporate divisions, use SPY police agents as security for their lucrative enterprises.
Unlike the average police officer, who has greater responsibilities, these officials are well-trained law enforcement personnel with the necessary skills to maintain order within their respective organizations. In their corporate setting, police officials behave more secretly than they do in public.
Many of those who have worked in such companies prior to receiving the crucial preparatory education at the Police Training School, have greater chances of securing their positions.
For the arrangement of extra police officers to safeguard properties, the applicant must submit a request to the Inspector General after completing the requisite requirements, with the approval of the President, before such an arrangement is permitted.
Note that any SPY official so delegated will only be used for tasks related to the security of the designated company and its assets. Officers shall have the exclusive authority, benefits, and privileges of a cop or police officer within the zone to which they are assigned or designated.
For managerial duties on police property, the
supernumerary officer delegates will only be deployed for tasks related to the organization or maintenance of those premises. The official will enjoy the powers, advantages, and conveniences of a police officer within the scope of his responsibilities.
