During his audition with Sam Phillips, Johnny Cash sang a number of gospel songs, but Phillips told him he was no longer interested in having Cash record any such material. An interview from 2002 shows that he disproves the claim that Sam Phillips told him to “go home and sin, then come back with a song I can sell.”
Elvis Presley dropped into Sam Phillips’ studio on December 4, 1956, while Carl Perkins and Jerry Lee Lewis were there recording new material. Once Johnny Cash showed up, the four of them started an inadvertent jam session.
Sam Phillips accidentally left the tapes running, so the recordings were preserved. They have now been reissued, this time with the title Million Dollar Quartet.
