The Early Years And Education
Matthew Tyler Musto was born in Florida on November 27, 1990. Musto was the lead singer of the Florida-based rock band Polaroid while in high school. One album, Paint The Town, one EP, Inside And Out, and one demo, The Cure Demo, were published.
Musto began his solo career after leaving Polaroid and moving to Atlanta to collaborate with Ne-Yo.

Musto was the lead singer of the Florida-based rock band Polaroid while in high school. They have released one studio album, Paint The Town; one extended play, Inside And Out; and one demo, The Cure Demo, and have been described as a pop punk, punk rock, and garage band.
During Musto’s freshman year of high school, Leakmob Records signed the band. To focus on music, Musto dropped out of school in the tenth grade. Polaroid’s music became increasingly impacted by emo as their career developed. In 2008, Musto began to compose his own solo songs.
Musto began his solo career after leaving Polaroid and moving to Atlanta to collaborate with Ne-Yo.
His debut EP, Brightness, was released in 2008, followed by Contrast in 2009 and Exposure in 2010. In late-2010, he released the Christmas song “I Hate the Holidays” with Tyler Carter, then a member of the band Woe Is Me.
In early January 2011, he released a new single titled “Douche Bag.” Musto released both the Gone For Good EP and the Year of the Blackbear EP in the middle of 2011. Musto opted to utilize the alias Blackbear for his musical output in the fall of 2011.
In November 2011, Mike Posner’s “Marauder Music” was the first song to be released under the Blackbear alias.
In early 2012, Musto co-wrote “Boyfriend” by Justin Bieber, which peaked at number two on the Billboard Hot 100. Musto released his debut EP, Foreplay, on April 20, 2012, and his debut mixtape, Sex, on October 31, 2012, in pursuit of a career as an R&B singer.
Both albums were released under the moniker Blackbear, and Sex contained contributions from “Boyfriend” co-writer Mike Posner, as well as vocalists, composers, and producers James Blake and Maejor Ali. Additionally, he participated in “End of the Road” from MGK’s Lace Up album, which was released on October 9, 2012.
Blackbear released The Afterglow EP on April 20, 2014, which put him at number four on Billboard’s Uncharted chart for releases by new artists.
Blackbear was one of the first indie artists to monetize SoundCloud streaming in 2014.
Songwriting and Producing
Musto has produced and written for other well-known artists in addition to his own work. He has collaborated with a variety of musicians, including Justin Bieber, G-Eazy, Mike Posner, All Time Low, Nick Jonas, Machine Gun Kelly, Ellie Goulding, Cam’ron, Gucci Mane, 2 Chainz, Mod Sun, Rivers Cuomo, Linkin Park, Billie Eilish, Pharrell Williams, Miley Cyrus, Mike Shinoda, Charlie Puth, and Tiny Meat Gang.
Together with Mike Posner, he co-wrote “Boyfriend” by Justin Bieber, which debuted at number two on the Billboard Hot 100. In addition to featuring on G-album Eazy’s These Things Happen, he also produced the album’s title tune.
Private Life
Due to heavy alcohol consumption, he was hospitalized and diagnosed with chronic pancreatitis in April 2016.
During his hospitalization, he composed the album Digital Druglord and used the time to get sober.
In August of 2018, Musto partnered with Mission: Cure, a non-profit organization committed to discovering a cure for chronic pancreatitis.
He received the “Courage Award” for serving as an inspiration to others living with pancreatitis and spoke at their gala event. Musto collaborated with the brand PopSockets in November 2018 and donated 50% of the proceeds from his branded items to Mission:Cure.
Musto and his partner, Michele Maturo, revealed on September 25, 2019 that they were expecting their first child in January 2020. The couple revealed on January 29, 2020 that their son was born on January 26, 2020.
The couple announced their engagement on Maturo’s Instagram page on April 11, 2021. On March 12, 2022, the couple’s second son was born.
