Early years
King was born in Alliance, Ohio, to a physician father. Maxwell Perkins, his maternal grandfather, was a well-known editor for the publishing company Charles Scribner’s Sons. King is the great-great-grandson of U.S.
Senator William M. Evarts and the great-great-great-grandson of one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence, Roger Sherman, through Perkins. King graduated from Yale University with a degree in acting and also attended Juilliard.
Career
King made his film debut in the 1972 film Slaughterhouse-Five at the age of about 23. In the blaxploitation film Mandingo, he portrayed Hammond Maxwell in 1975.
He has appeared in scores of feature films, television shows, and television movies since the 1970s.
He tried out for the role of Han Solo in Star Wars, but Harrison Ford ultimately won the part. Nonetheless, he portrayed the character in radio adaptations of Star Wars and its two sequels.
King was nominated for a Golden Globe in 1984 for his performance in the television film The Hasty Heart. In the same year, he was cast as Cody Allen in the television series Riptide.
In 1993, he starred in the television adaption of A Stranger in the Mirror by Sidney Sheldon, a novel à clef about Groucho Marx. In Melrose Place in 1995, he played the part of Hayley Armstrong.
In 2000, he co-starred alongside Yasmine Bleeth in the NBC television series Titans as Richard Williams, and in 2004, he portrayed the President of the United States in the film The Day After Tomorrow.
King has been on television programs such as Spin City, Will & Grace, Eve, and Cold Case.
In the 1985 animated film Samson & Delilah, he provided the voice for Samson, and in an episode of SWAT Kats: The Radical Squadron, he provided the voice for Randall.
Private Life
King is twice-divorced and has two daughters and one granddaughter.
King was featured in California’s Gold by Huell Howser, where he discussed his collection of motorbikes and sidecars.
The American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) appointed King to its Board of Directors in December 2008.
