The Oluwo of Iwo, Oba Abdulrosheed Adewale Akanbi, has offered valuable advice to Nigerians on how to cope with the financial challenges caused by the removal of fuel subsidy. He suggested that car pooling could be an effective way to reduce car maintenance costs, especially fuel consumption. Emphasizing the need to adapt to the new circumstances, he also proposed cycling and walking for shorter distances, which can be beneficial for individuals who are able to do so.
In a statement from his Chief Press Secretary, the Osun monarch encouraged Nigerians to embrace car pooling with neighbors and trusted friends who have similar weekly or monthly routines. This arrangement involves using one person’s car for a week, another person’s car for the following week, and so on, to save on fuel expenses. The Oluwo of Iwo also highlighted the benefits of bicycle riding and walking for short distances, emphasizing that such practices are common even in advanced countries.
Oba Akanbi urged wealthy Nigerians to demonstrate sportsmanship by assisting their neighbors’ children with transportation to school, especially when they have extra capacity in their cars. He acknowledged the financial challenges facing the nation and called on the government to expedite palliatives and salary increments for workers.
The Oluwo of Iwo believes that embracing these alternative transportation methods and demonstrating patience will help Nigerians weather the immediate effects of the fuel subsidy removal and ultimately lead to a better future for the country.
