Nigerian afrobeats sensation Divine Ikubor, known as Rema, is rapidly approaching the record set by the late South African music legend Hugh Masekela for the highest-charting African song on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart.
The remix of Rema’s popular track “Calm Down,” featuring American singer Selena Gomez, has achieved a new milestone by reaching Number 4 on the current Hot 100 chart, setting a new Nigerian record.
This achievement now places Rema’s song as the second-highest charting track on the Hot 100 by an African artist in history.
It’s worth noting that Rema had previously surpassed Wizkid’s record as the highest-charting Nigerian lead artist in Billboard Hot 100 history when “Calm Down” surpassed Wizkid’s “Essence,” which peaked at number 9 last year.
Projections indicate that “Calm Down” is likely to achieve an even higher position on the Hot 100 chart next week.
Although Wizkid and Tems have reached number one on the Hot 100 chart, it is important to clarify that they achieved this as featured artists, rather than as lead acts.
