Early Life And Education
Actor Chief Pete Edochie was born in Nigeria on March 7, 1947. Awards like Africa Magic’s Industry Merit Award and the Africa Film Academy’s Lifetime Achievement Award show that Edochie is among the best actors in Africa. After years of working in administration and broadcasting, he finally broke through in the 1980s when he was cast as Okonkwo in a Nigerian Television Authority production of Chinua Achebe’s Things Fall Apart. Edochie is a Catholic and a member of the Igbo ethnic group of Nigeria. He was given the title “Member of the Order of the Niger” by President Olusegun Obasanjo in 2003.
Career
In 1967, at the age of 20, Edochie entered the field of radio broadcasting as a junior programming assistant and eventually worked his way up to the position of director. He was officially the director of programs, but he also filled in as the deputy managing director and the managing director on occasion. He left his position as general manager at Anambra Broadcasting Service (ABS) after the state government intervened in the station’s FM broadcasting operations and demanded the departure of the station’s entire management.
He was supposed to take over as MD right away, but he ditched that to pursue a career in movies instead. Before that, he had already received an international award for his role in Things Fall Apart. The BBC sent a crew to Nigeria to talk to him about his performance in Things Fall Apart. It’s estimated that he’s worked on over 18 films altogether.
Edochie and several other actors, including Genevieve Nnaji, Omotola Jalade Ekeinde, Nkem Owoh, Ramsey Noah, Stella Damasus Aboderin, and Richard Mofe Damijo, were banned from filming for a year in 2005 by the Actors Guild of Nigeria. They were accused of asking for huge salaries from producers because they were A-list celebrities.
