Early life And Education
Tweet as an American performer and songwriter. Tweet was born in January 1972 in Rochester, New York. In New York, where she received her early schooling and credentials, she grew up.
She opted to pursue a career in music after being influenced by music as a child and deciding to pursue a career in music.
Career
Tweet joined the female trio Sugah in the early 1990s, leaving her daughter with her parents in Panama City, Florida, while Tweet travelled to other locations.
Tweet, Susan Weems, and Rolita White comprised Sugah, which was a part of Devante Swing’s Swing Mob collective.
Timbaland, Magoo, Missy “Misdemeanor” Elliott (who was a member of Sista at the time), Playa, Ginuwine, and Renee Anderson were all members of the Swing Mob collective. During her time with Sugah, Tweet and Elliott developed a close bond.
Tweet returned to her parents’ home in Panama City, destitute and despondent in 1999, when Sugah was going nowhere, had no album to show, and had broken numerous promises.
Tweet had suicidal thoughts following a succession of disastrous relationships and a variety of jobs, but she received a phone call from Elliott, asking her to contribute background vocals to her then-most recent album, Miss E… So Compulsive.
Tweet felt she could confide in Elliott about her circumstances and struggles. She still refers to Elliott as her “guardian angel.”
In 2000, Tweet began recording vocals for Elliott’s album and reunited with her Swing Mob mates, Timbaland, Magoo, Playa, and Ginuwine.
She also provided vocals on the follow-up to Timbaland and Magoo’s platinum-selling first album from 1997, Welcome to Our World, as well as Timbaland’s solo album, Tim’s Bio: Life from da Bassment.
Elliott launched her third platinum-selling album, Miss E… So Addictive, in 2001, with vocal contributions from Tweet on five tracks. Tweet also contributed vocals to the 2001 albums Pain Is Love by Ja Rule, Dark Days and Bright Nights by Bubba Sparxxx, Diary of a Sinner: First Entry by Petey Pablo, and Indecent Proposal by Timbaland and Magoo.
Tweet reached the charts in March 2002 with her first solo single, “Oops (Oh My),” a racy song about self-love and respect. Timbaland produced the song, which included guest vocals by Missy Elliott.
With the help of a remix featuring Fabolous, the single topped the Hot R & B/Hip-Hop Songs chart and peaked at number seven on the Billboard Hot 100.
Tweet released her debut album, Southern Hummingbird, in April 2002 to mostly positive reviews. Craig Brockman, Nisan Stewart, guitarist John “Jubu” Smith, Timbaland (who contributed four tracks), and Tweet produced the album.
It also included guest vocals from Elliott on “Oops (Oh My),” Bilal on “Best Friend,” and Ms. Jade from BeatClub Records on “Sexual Healing (Oops Pt. 2),” as well as a bonus track by Elliott, “Big Spender.”
Tweet’s personal life experiences were reflected in the album’s soul-stirring vocals and lyrics. The album spawned two more songs, “Call Me,” produced by Timbaland, and “Smoking Cigarettes,” a radio hit for which Little X shot and directed a music video that was never published.
The album entered the Billboard 200 list at number three. Trina’s second single from her hit album Diamond Princess was released in that year.
The song was titled “No Panties,” and Missy Elliott and Nisan Stewart wrote and produced it. Tweet has also been included on albums by Meshell Ndegeocello, Karen Clark Sheard, Ms. Jade, Whitney Houston, and Elliott.
Tweet has also been included on albums by Meshell Ndegeocello, Karen Clark Sheard, Ms. Jade, Whitney Houston, and Elliott. Tweet made cameo appearances on four of the album’s tracks, as well as in the music videos for “Work It” and “Gossip Folks.”
Tweet was nominated for the Soul Train Lady of Soul Award for Best New Artist, but Ashanti won the award. However, in the same year, Tweet was awarded the Rochester, New York Key to the City.
Along with Missy Elliott, Lil’ Kim, DMX, Toni Braxton, Queen Latifah, Ananda Lewis, Playa, Jamie Foxx, Lil’ Mo, AJ, and Free (among others), Tweet appeared in Aaliyah’s posthumous hit single, “Miss You.”
More guest vocals appeared in 2003, including Madonna’s American Life: The Remixes Single, Monica’s After the Storm, Mark Ronson’s Here Comes the Fuzz, and Angie Stone’s Stone Love on the 2004 Grammy Award-nominated song “U-Haul.”
Tweet turned to acting, making a cameo appearance in the film Honey, starring Jessica Alba, Mekhi Phifer, Lil’ Romeo, Joy Bryant, and Missy Elliott, and directed by music video director Billie Woodruff.
Tweet performed “Oops (Oh My)” and “Smoking Cigarettes” in an episode of the 2002 comedy series The Parkers. Tweet also appeared on the Honey album’s tune “Thugman,” which was produced by Elliott.
Tweet also performed “Hypnotic” in the film, but it is not included on the album. The Orphanz also prepared a red-hot remix of the song.
In 2004, Tweet appeared in another of Elliott’s music videos, “I’m Really Hot” from This Is Not a Test!, but was absent as a vocalist from the album. The Tweet also appeared on the posthumously unreleased Aaliyah track “Where Could He Be?” produced by Elliott.
The song enjoyed some radio success but has not yet been officially released. Missy Elliott made her move from Elektra Entertainment Group to Atlantic Records, taking Tweet and The Goldmind Inc. with her.
In 2003 and 2004, Tweet began recording songs for her follow-up to Southern Hummingbird, which was supposed to be released in early 2004, but due to the label changes, was pushed back.
In late 2004, Tweet joined Cee-Lo Green and Teedra Moses on the 2004 Seagram’s Gin Live Tour in promotion of her new single, “Turn da Lights Off.”
The song was produced by Missy Elliott and Kwamé, featured vocals from Elliott, and contained a sample of Marvin Gaye’s “If This World Were Mine” and Nat King Cole’s “Lost April”.
While on tour, Tweet performed her old tracks and premiered her new single and some of her newer tracks, including “My Man” and “Sports, Sex & Food.”
On March 22, 2005, Tweet released her second album, It’s Me Again. The album featured production from Missy Elliott on seven of the tracks; Craig Brockman, Nisan Stewart, brothers Charlie Bereal and Kenny Bereal, Walter Milsap III, Kwamé, The Goldmind Inc.’s Soul Diggaz, Marty Cintron III, Madball Entertainment, and Timbaland and Tweet (who both only contributed producing credits on one track each).
The album featured vocals from Tweet’s 15-year-old daughter, Tashawna, on “Two of Us”, Rell on “Could It Be”, and Missy Elliott on “Turn da Lights Off” and “Things I Don’t Mean”. The album also featured the hidden bonus track “When I Need a Man” (theme song from the USA Network Original Series, Kojak, starring Ving Rhames).
The album peaked at #17 on the Billboard album charts and then quickly fell off the charts due to a lack of promotion and mis-management from Atlantic Records.
There was talk of filming a second video for either “Cab Ride” (which sampled the theme song from the TV show “Taxi”) or “Sports, Sex & Food,” but this never happened.
Tweet then broke away from her manager, Mona Scott, and Violator Management, and signed with Mathew Knowles of Music World, who managed the careers of Destiny’s Child, Beyoncé Knowles, Michelle Williams, Kelly Rowland, Solange Knowles, Sunshine Anderson, and Trin-i-tee 5:7. Tweet still maintains a close friendship with Mona Scott and is still signed to The Goldmind Inc.
Tweet appeared on Elliott’s sixth album release, The Cookbook, contributing vocals to three tracks, including the single, “Teary Eyed.” “Boogie 2nite” (a song from the album Southern Hummingbird) was covered by Booty Luv (vocalists Nadia and Cherise from the British act Big Brovaz), which reached number two on the UK Singles Chart on December 10, 2006, after three years of UK club success. However, there was no official single release of Tweet’s original.
In 2007, Tweet performed alongside Timbaland, Eve, Keyshia Cole, Nelly Furtado, Fat Man Scoop, and Ciara at the fourth annual VH1 Hip Hop Honors, which aired on October 8 and honored the work of Missy Elliott.
The same year, she departed from Missy Elliott’s Goldmind Inc. camp and signed to Jheryl Busby and Mike City’s record label, Umbrella Recordings.
There, she began recording material for her third album along with producers Nisan Stewart, Warryn Campbell, and Novel.
Initially titled Love, Tweet, the album was preceded by the buzz single “Good Bye My Dear”, a collaboration with rapper T.I., and expected to be released on April 8, 2008.
Unfortunately, the lead single “Anymore” failed to materialize. Tweet, Bilal, Dwele, and German singer Joy Denalane performed with The Dresden Soul Symphony in Dresden, Germany on April 26 and 27, 2008.
The foursome reworked and blended soul hits with classical music. On October 24, 2008, The Dresden Soul Symphony LP and DVD were subsequently published.
Tweet left Umbrella in 2010 owing to a lack of promotion and persistent delays. Tweet signed with MC Lyte’s record company, DuBose Music Group, in late 2011.
As part of her weekly SoundCloud-hosted special Tweet Tuesdays, she began publishing previously unheard tracks from the It’s Me Again and Love, Tweet recording sessions on her new website in June 2012.
Simply Tweet was released by DuBose in February of 2013. The five-track album, recorded live with a full band, was followed by the single “Enough.”
The digital extended play charted in the top thirty on US Billboard’s Top Independent Albums and Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums.
Tweet announced in July 2015 that she had joined with the indie eOne Music label.
Her third regular studio album, Charlene, with production by Missy Elliott, was set to be released in the United States on January 22, 2016, and its lead single on September 21, 2015.
The “Hummingbird” singer sat down with Lindsey Sullivan (of Billboard) on February 29, 2016 to discuss her new album, “Charlene.”
During the conversation, Tweet expressed her enthusiasm about collaborating with Timbaland and Missy Elliott.
She added that the record was a maturing experience and that she had grown as an artist over her lengthy sabbatical.
