Babagana Kingibe, the former Vice-Presidential running mate to late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola of the defunct Social Democratic Party (SDP) in the June 12, 1993, presidential election, has called upon Nigerians to draw inspiration from Abiola’s unwavering commitment and readiness to sacrifice his life.
Kingibe made this appeal on Monday, following President Bola Ahmed’s inspection of a Guard of Honour at the Forecourt of the Presidential Villa in Abuja, as part of the activities commemorating the 2023 Democracy Day celebration.
He expressed gratitude on behalf of the nation for Abiola’s sacrifices in the fight for democracy in the country. Kingibe urged Nigerians to be inspired by Abiola’s courage, steadfast commitment, and his willingness to lay down his life, as the country will forever be indebted to him for these sacrifices.
Reflecting on the emotions evoked by the commemoration, the former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) stated, “It always brings back very vivid memories of the entire process and the sadness that followed with the annulment. However, I firmly believe in looking forward, and in his Democracy Day address, the President has outlined our journey and set clear directions for making our country great, strengthening democracy, and defending it at all times. His speech was truly inspiring, and I believe that all responsible citizens of this country should carefully study it, draw inspiration from it, and be guided by it. It is a remarkable thing.”
