During an unexpected visit to civil servants at the Alausa secretariat in Ikeja, Lagos State, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu expressed his disappointment and criticized fuel marketers for exploiting Nigerians by increasing fuel prices.
Accompanied by Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat and guided by the Head of Service, Hakeem Muri-Okunola, Governor Sanwo-Olu described the sudden rise in petrol prices and resulting queues as unjust, urging Nigerians to be truthful about the situation. He stressed that it was premature to question the decisions made by the new president and called upon major fuel marketers to refrain from taking advantage of the current circumstances.
Additionally, Governor Sanwo-Olu stated that there have been no significant changes in the government’s pronouncements that would justify the lengthy queues. He expressed confidence in the federal government’s ability to promptly address the issue and encouraged everyone to comply with the law, carry on with their daily activities, and assured them that the situation would improve.
This incident occurred in response to the reemergence of long queues at certain fuel stations in the Lagos metropolis on Monday, May 30, 2023, leading to panic buying among motorists throughout the state.
