Senator Gershom Bassey, who represents the Cross River State southern district, has provided the reasons behind his sponsorship of a bill to amend the federal constitution, which has now passed its third reading.
During his presentation of his eight years of legislative experience in the National Assembly on Tuesday, Senator Bassey explained that the bill aims to grant oversight powers to the National Assembly over any fund or account created to save excess government revenue, once it is signed into law.
Additionally, Senator Bassey highlighted his sponsorship of a bill to amend the National Boundary, which is intended to address the recurring interboundary conflicts.
Throughout his tenure, Senator Bassey personally sponsored 18 bills and co-sponsored 17 others. These include bills such as amending the Nigerian Flag and Coat of Arms Act, the establishment of the Federal College of Forestry Technology and Research in Akamkpa, and the amendment of the Citizenship and Leadership Training Centre Act (establishment).
Furthermore, Senator Bassey supported bills such as amending the Petroleum Product Pricing Regulatory Agency (establishment) Act, establishing the Chartered Institute of Professional Secretarial Staff of Nigeria, establishing the Nigerian Research Institute of Fisheries and Aquaculture in Bakassi, and introducing mandatory public infrastructure maintenance, among other connected purposes, in 2021.
