Don Jazzy, a renowned Nigerian producer and singer, recently revealed that Daddy Showkey, a legendary musician, was his role model while growing up in Ajegunle, Lagos. He expressed that Daddy Showkey, along with Baba Fryo, inspired him to pursue a career in music.
Don Jazzy explained that he began his musical journey in the church as an instrumentalist because he couldn’t afford to book studio sessions at that time.
During his appearance on the Leaderboard podcast hosted by Fisayo Fosudo, Don Jazzy shared his admiration for the musicians from Ajegunle, stating, “My music inspiration started from Ajegunle because of Daddy Showkey and Baba Fryo, along with many other Ajegunle musicians we looked up to.”
He further elaborated that he aspired to achieve the same level of success as Daddy Showkey, whose songs like “If you see my mama, hosanna” and “Somebody call my name, Showkey” were practically national anthems.
Due to financial constraints, Don Jazzy relied on church instruments as the only available free equipment for him to practice his music. He mentioned that instead of initially pursuing ragga or reggae music, he started by playing gospel music in the church setting.
