The Nigeria Police have expressed their disapproval of how former Naval officer and comedian, Abdulgafar Abiola (popularly known as Cute Abiola), portrayed the police uniform in his comedy skits. According to the police, the skits, which were shared on his social media accounts on July 20 and 24, 2023, negatively depict the police force.
In response to these skits, the Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, issued a statement on Thursday, stating that Cute Abiola’s actions violated Section 251 of the Criminal Code and Section 133 of the Penal Code Law. As a result, the comedian will be investigated and may face prosecution.
The police spokesperson emphasized that the force had previously warned skit makers and filmmakers to refrain from disrespecting the police uniform or its accoutrements.
Adejobi urged Nigerians to exercise their freedom of expression responsibly and avoid actions that could undermine public trust in law enforcement institutions.
It is worth noting that Cute Abiola had resigned from the Nigerian Navy in November of the previous year to pursue a career in comedy. He attributed his success in comedy to the discipline instilled in him during his time in the Navy.
