In an intriguing development, the Sabo-Yaba Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos has granted a request to extend the remand of Seun Kuti for an additional four days. The Chief Magistrate, Mrs. Adeola Olatubosun, made the decision, extending Kuti’s remand until May 22.
The request for the extension was made by Mr. Simon Lough (SAN), who appeared in court alongside a group of police attorneys. According to Lough, the purpose of the extension is to allow for further case-specific research.
The incident leading to Kuti’s arrest reportedly occurred on May 13 on the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos State. The police have charged him with slapping an inspector after driving recklessly on the bridge and intentionally obstructing a moving police vehicle.
Kuti was initially arraigned on Tuesday, and the chief magistrate ordered his remand for 48 hours. However, she also stated that the defendant should be granted bail in the amount of one million Naira with two sureties in a similar sum, once the 48-hour remand period concludes.
Interestingly, the chief magistrate specified that one of the sureties must be a landlord within the jurisdiction of the court. She adjourned the case until May 22 for further proceedings and instructed the prosecutor to duplicate the case file and forward a copy to the state director of public prosecutions for advice.
The extension of Kuti’s remand and the upcoming court proceedings add a layer of suspense to the case, leaving many curious about the outcome and potential implications for the renowned musician.
