Childhood and education
Jonathan Lyndale Kirk was born in Cleveland, Ohio on December 22, 1991. In 1999, he relocated to Charlotte, North Carolina, where he spent most of his formative years. In 2010 he marked his graduation from Vance High School (now named Julius L. Chambers High School).
He attended the University of North Carolina at Greensboro for two years but did not graduate, claiming he merely attended for the sake of his parents. His two older brothers introduced him to Eminem, 50 Cent, and Lil Wayne when he was young.
Career
Between 2014 and 2015, Kirk started to take music seriously.
In 2015, he launched his musical career with the release of his debut mixtape, Nonfiction. Later, he released the God’s Work, Baby Talk, Billion Dollar Baby, and Back on My Baby Jesus Sh*t mixtape series.
Initially performing under the name Baby Jesus, he ultimately changed it out of worry that it was becoming a distraction.
After signing with Arnold Taylor, the president of the South Coast Music Group label and a major radio promoter, Kirk received his big break.
Taylor witnessed Kirk perform in North Carolina venues around the time he launched his label. Taylor was responsible for the early success of Southern rap artists such as Yo Gotti and Future.
Once they began working together, the group continued to generate excitement around the South with mixtapes and club performances while Kirk developed his sound.
Through his contract with South Coast, Kirk acquired a brief distribution agreement with Jay-Roc Z’s Nation for his 2018 breakthrough mixtape, Blank Blank.
With the help of Taylor, and after major label bidding battles, Kirk was able to secure a seven-figure recording contract with Interscope.
Controversy
Kirk was apprehended and questioned in Miami in January 2020 in relation to a robbery investigation.
The authorities apprehended him after discovering he had a warrant out for his arrest in Texas for a battery offense.
In Tampa, Florida, Kirk smacked a female fan on his way to the stage during his “Up Close and Personal” tour in 2020.
The audience responded with jeers, and he left without singing any songs. He said that he struck her because she held her phone too close to his face while recording a flash-enabled video.
In July 2021, Kirk was criticized for remarks that were widely perceived as homophobic. On July 25, when performing at the Rolling Loud Festival in Miami, he stated:
“Put your cellphone light in the air if you did not arrive today with HIV/AIDS or any of the other fatal sexually transmitted diseases that will kill you in two to three weeks.” If your pus*y smells like water, ladies, shine a cellphone light in the air.
“Men, if you’re not sucking dick in the parking lot, raise your cell phone light.”
Personal life
Regarding his religious beliefs, he declared the following in 2019: “I’m blessed. I am covered by Christ’s blood.”
Kirk has three children, the oldest of whom was born in 2017. In 2019, shortly after the release of Kirk’s maiden studio album, his father passed away.
The cover of his second album, which is a tribute to his surname, has a photograph of his father. Glen Johnson, the brother of Kirk, died in November 2020 at the age of 34 from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
In 2020, he dated American singer DaniLeigh. After her song lyrics “yellow bone, that’s what he desires” sparked controversy in February 2021, they separated.
Several months after the breakup, it was apparently verified that Kirk had fathered a kid with the singer after an Instagram video of them was shared.
In August 2020, Kirk formally endorsed independent candidate and fellow rapper Kanye West’s presidential campaign.
