A High Court in Abuja has declared the arrest and detention of Godwin Emefiele, the suspended governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), as invalid. The decision was made by Judge Bello Kawu in response to an application made by Emefiele.
On June 9, President Bola Tinubu suspended Emefiele from his position as CBN Governor and instructed him to hand over his responsibilities to Deputy Governor Folashodun Adebisi Shonubi. The following day, the Department of State Services (DSS) confirmed that Emefiele was in their custody for investigative reasons. Since then, Emefiele has remained in DSS custody, with the agency claiming to have a valid court order for his detention.
On Thursday, the DSS announced that Emefiele had been charged in court following a ruling from the FCT High Court.
