Omoyele Sowore, a human rights activist, has alleged that if former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele, is prosecuted for his crimes while in office, he would implicate ex-President Muhammadu Buhari and his entire family. Sowore claimed that Emefiele’s prosecution would extend to certain Senators, members of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Buhari’s in-laws, and other individuals.
In a tweet, Sowore clarified that the charges against Emefiele were only a “holding charge,” suggesting that he is being held on behalf of those in power. Sowore further asserted that if Emefiele were to face prosecution for his alleged financial crimes, including economic sabotage, money laundering, terrorism financing involvement, and foreign exchange (FX) round tripping, he would implicate various individuals, including Buhari, his family members, APC leaders, state governors, Senators, media practitioners, military and police officials, members of the Department of State Services (DSS), the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), and even individuals in civil society.
According to Sowore, numerous individuals and institutions would face severe consequences if Emefiele were to disclose information regarding the alleged crimes. He also stated that ongoing negotiations were taking place, suggesting that Emefiele’s current detention is merely a temporary measure before his release.
