The Northern Elders Forum (NEF) has criticized President Bola Tinubu’s decision to remove fuel subsidy, stating that it does not bode well for his administration. NEF’s spokesperson, Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, expressed concern over the sharp increase in fuel prices following Tinubu’s announcement during his inauguration on Monday.
Tinubu had stated that funds previously allocated for fuel subsidy would be redirected to other infrastructure development projects across the country. However, Baba-Ahmed lamented the significant rise in petrol prices and suggested that the new administration may face challenges in reversing the decision.
In a tweet, Baba-Ahmed wrote, “Booby-trapped, or just plain lack of experience, the skyrocketing rise in prices of petrol following President Tinubu’s comment on the absence of budgetary provision for fuel subsidy does not give the new administration a good start. Getting out will be tougher than staying put.”
The statement from NEF reflects concerns about the immediate impact of the fuel subsidy removal and highlights the potential difficulties that the new administration may face in managing the consequences.
