The House of Representatives in Nigeria has urged the new administration to implement palliative measures to alleviate the impact of the removal of petroleum subsidy on Nigerians. This resolution was included in a report submitted by a committee that was formed last year to investigate the subsidy.
The committee’s report was deliberated and approved on Thursday by the Committee of the Whole. Among the recommendations adopted by the House is the procurement of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses as an alternative transport system that uses cheaper fuel consumption compared to petroleum.
The House called on the government to promptly develop measures and palliatives to mitigate the effects of the subsidy removal, starting from 2023. They also emphasized the need for the introduction of an intermodal, regional, and national transport system to facilitate the efficient movement of people throughout the country.
It should be noted that the removal of subsidies, as declared by President Bola Tinubu, has resulted in an increase in the price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) at petrol pumps across Nigeria. Transportation operators have also raised their fares in response to the development.
