Charly Boy, a renowned Nigerian musician and activist whose real name is Charles Emeka Oputa, has issued a threat to file a lawsuit against his former record label, Premier Records Limited. The lawsuit is in response to an alleged breach of contract that was signed in 1988.
In a letter dated June 19, 2023, and sent by his lawyer, Rockson Igelige, Charly Boy claimed that Premier Records had violated the terms of their agreement, which was signed 35 years ago. He stated that he had signed “artists recording contracts” with the company in 1988, 1990, and more recently, but all of these contracts have now expired.
Charly Boy accused Premier Records of continuing to breach the copyrights to his musical works, even after the expiration of the contracts. The letter demanded that the company hand over his master tapes, artworks, promotional materials, and other relevant and confidential information within 30 days. Additionally, Charly Boy demanded payment of his outstanding royalties.
The letter also served as a legal notice, warning Premier Records to stop further breach of his copyrights. It stated that failure to comply would result in legal action being taken against the company.
As of the time of this report, Premier Records has not yet responded to the allegations made by Charly Boy.
