According to Dr. Vincent Olatunji, the National Commissioner of the Nigeria Data Protection Bureau (NDPB), the Nigeria Data Protection Act of 2023 establishes a legal framework for safeguarding personal information and ensuring data protection practices in Nigeria.
This statement was made during the validation workshop for the NDPD Strategic Roadmap and Action Plan (SRAP) held in Abuja. The bill was submitted to the Senate and House of Representatives for consideration and approval on April 4, 2023, through a letter from former President Muhammadu Buhari.
The newly enacted law replaces the NDPB, which was established by President Buhari in February 2022, and establishes the Nigeria Data Protection Commission. The Commission will be headed by a National Commissioner who will be responsible for regulating the processing of personal information.
